Pavement Plants: Community Encounters
Pavement plants are those weeds and wildflowers escaping and growing in the cracks of urban paths and roads. Against the odds, they flourish in these in-between spaces and provide unexpected joyful encounters underneath our feet.
Pavement Plants: Community Encounters is a participatory art project developed by MA Fine Art students from Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London (UAL). Over three days, from Thursday 27 – Saturday 29 March, a series of public workshops and events will be delivered by artists who are considering what it means to work temporarily within a community which is not theirs. Like pavement plants, works created at the public events will become part of a growing exhibition in the space.
At the heart of this project is UAL’s temporary occupation of The Good Rice – once a bakery, now a workshop-come-gallery space and zone of contact between artist and community.
Pavement Plants asks: What encounters can there be between art student and the local community? And are any connections formed?
Workshops and exhibition delivered and curated by:
Emily Bottomer, Finn Hughes-Smith, Josie Sommer, Julia Chwascinksa, Kat Newman, Niamh Shepherd, Orly Smetana , Stephanie Harlow
